CLILandlanguageimmersion[edit] CLILisfundamentallybasedonmethodologicalprinciplesestablishedbyresearchonlanguageimmersion.ThiskindofapproachhasbeenidentifiedasveryimportantbytheEuropeanCommission[4]because:"Itcanprovideeffectiveopportunitiesforpupilstousetheirnewlanguageskillsnow,ratherthanlearnthemnowforlateruse.Itopensdoorsonlanguagesforabroaderrangeoflearners,nurturingself-confidenceinyounglearnersandthosewhohavenotrespondedwelltoformallanguageinstructioningeneraleducation.Itprovidesexposuretothelanguagewithoutrequiringextratimeinthecurriculum,whichcanbeofparticularinterestinvocationalsettings."Thisapproachinvolveslearningsubjectssuchashistory,geography,managerialskills/conceptsorothers,throughanadditionallanguage.Itcanbeverysuccessfulinenhancingthelearningoflanguagesandothersubjects,andhelpingchildrendevelopapositiveattitudetowardsthemselvesaslanguagelearners. TheEuropeanCommissionhasthereforedecidedtopromotethetrainingofteachersto"...enhancingthelanguagecompetencesingeneral,inordertopromotetheteachingofnon-linguisticsubjectsinforeignlanguages".[5][6] CLILobjectives[edit] CLILobjectivesarevaried,butamongthemostrelevantonesthefollowingcanbepointedout(Coyleetal.,2010):[7]Toimprovetheeducationalsystem.ToestablishthenecessaryconditionsthatwillallowstudentstoachievetheappropriatelevelofacademicperformanceinCLILsubjects.Toimprovestudents’proficiencyinboththeirmothertongueandthetargetlanguage,attachingthesameimportancetoeach.Todeveloptheinterculturalunderstanding.Todevelopsocialandthinkingskills. CLILadvocatesclaimthatthiseducationalapproach(Lorenzoetal.,2011):[8]ImprovesL1andL2development.Preparesstudentsfortheglobalizedworld.Increasesstudents’motivationtolearnforeignlanguages.Promotesthelearningofamoreextensiveandvariedvocabulary.Enhancesstudents’confidenceinthetargetlanguage.Improveslanguagecompetenceinthetargetlanguage,CLILbeingmorebeneficialthantraditionalforeignlanguageteachingcourses.Helpsdevelopinterculturalcompetence.
