Transition:AsweexaminewhatGodhastosayaboutabrokenspirit,Iwantustolookatthesymptoms,cause,resultsandcure. 1. Thesymptomofabrokenspirit a. Howdowedefineabrokenspirit? 1) TheHebrewwordtranslated“broken”meansstrickenorafflicted.Itreferstoahurtorpain. 2) Anotherdictionarydescribesitasbeingcrushed.Itisthesamewordthatdescribesthecrushingofseedsamortarandpestletomakespices.Thecrushingsmashesandbreaksopentheseedandmakesitbleed. 3) HereGodappliesthewordbrokentothehumanspiritthathasbeencrushed. b. HowdoesGoddescribethebrokenspirit? 1) Inourtext,Hesaysitistheoppositeofamerryheart.Themerryheartisgladandjoyful.Therefore,thebrokenspiritissadandjoyless. 2) InProverbs15:13,Godsimilarlysays,“Amerryheartmakethacheerfulcountenance:butbysorrowoftheheartthespiritisbroken.”Abrokenspiritlacksacheerfulorgladface.Sorrowofheartisanypain,hurt,injury,orawoundthatsaddenstheheart. 3) Goddescribesthesamebrokenspiritaswoundedin(Proverbs18:14)“Thespiritofamanwillsustainhisinfirmity;butawoundedspiritwhocanbear?” 4) Fromtheseexamples,welearnthatthebrokenspiritisonethathaslostitjoyandsmile.Ithasbeencrushedandwoundedleavingithurtingandjoyless. O Wehaveallexperiencedthebrokenspirit.Itisamiserabledepressingfeeling.Thedevildelightsinushavingabrokenspirit.Whenweloseourjoy,weloseourtestimonyfortheLord.WefocusonourhurtsinsteadoffocusingontheLord’sgoodness. 2. Thecauseofabrokenspirit a. Unpleasantcircumstancescanbreakthespirit 1) Sadnewscancrushusandstealourjoy. 2) Stressandproblemsofanysortcanbreakthespirit. b. Worryingcanbreakthespirit 1) Worryisfrettingoversomethingthat“might”happen.The“whatif”questionsarespirit-breakers. 2) WorryissinbecauseitisfailingtotrustGod. 3) Thedevildelightsinpromotingworrytobreakourspirit. c. Unkindwordsoractionscanbreakthespirit 1) (Proverbs15:4)“Awholesometongueisatreeoflife:butperversenessthereinisabreachinthespirit.” a) Awholesomeorhealingtongueislikeatreeoflifethatproduceslife-givingfruit. b) Ontheotherhand,aperversetongueisonethatsaysthingsthatarecrookedortwisted.Theyarewordsthatcrushandhurt.Theybreakthespiritofothers. 2) Anotherwaythatwordsoractionsbreakthespiritisbymanipulation.Manipulationisskilfullyforcingorpersuadingpeopletodowhatyouwant.CollinsDictionary a) Making“youshould…”statementstocauseguiltcanbemanipulating. b) Givingtogetismanipulation. c) Screamingoryellingtogetaresponsecanbemanipulation. d) The“silenttreatment”isaformofmanipulation. e) Blamingotherscanbemanipulation. f) Evenasneer,asigh,orcryingcanbeaformofmanipulationtogetwhatyouwant. g) Manipulationbreaksthespirit.Itcrushes,wounds,hurtsanddrainsthejoyfromaperson’sheart. O Abrokenspiritmaythreatentomakeusbitter.However,wemustnotallowthattohappen.GodwillneverallowatrialtocometoyouthatHewillnotgivegracesufficienttoendure. 3. Theresultsofabrokenspirit a. Abrokenspiritdriesthebones 1) Drybonesareunhealthybones.Itisasifthepersondriesupinside.Heloseshiszestforlife. 2) Thereisclearlyapowerfulrelationshipbetweenemotionsandhealth.Ifyourspiritisbrokenandyoudonotgetyourjoyrestored,Godsaysitwillharmyouphysically. 3) Stress,worry,andanxietycausedbyunpleasantcircumstances,fretting,oranunkindrelationshipcanraisethebloodpressureandincreasetheriskofdisease. b. Abrokenspiritishardtobear 1) (Proverbs18:14)“Thespiritofamanwillsustainhisinfirmity;butawoundedspiritwhocanbear?” 2) Thisverseremindsusthatahealthyspiritwillsustainusduringinfirmities(i.e.,sickness,disease).However,whenthespiritiswoundedorbroken(sameHebrewword)itisdifficulttobearorcarry. 3) Godtrulyunderstandshowdifficultitisforyoutobearabrokenspirit.Christ’sexperienceswhileHewasinhumanfleshenabledHimtounderstandourburdens.(Hebrews4:15)“Forwehavenotanhighpriestwhichcannotbetouchedwiththefeelingofourinfirmities;butwasinallpointstemptedlikeasweare,yetwithoutsin.”(Hebrews2:18)“Forinthathehimselfhathsufferedbeingtempted,heisabletosuccour[help]themthataretempted.” O Abrokenspiritisharmfultoyourhealthanditisverydifficulttobear,butwemuststopfocussingonourcircumstancesandbeginfocusingonGod’slovingcure. 4. Thecureforabrokenspirit a. LooktotheLordforhelp 1) Godisalwaysgood,merciful,forgiving,caring,etc.StudyGod’scharacter.Meditateonit.Memorisesuchverses. 2) WithGod’shelp,protectyourspirit.Donotbecomebitter,angry,resentful,fretful,orrevengeful.Thesearesinfulreactions. 3) GiveyourburdenstotheLord.(Psalms55:22)“CastthyburdenupontheLORD,andheshallsustainthee:heshallneversuffertherighteoustobemoved.”(Philippians4:6-8)“Becarefulfornothing;butineverythingbyprayerandsupplicationwiththanksgivingletyourrequestsbemadeknownuntoGod.AndthepeaceofGod,whichpassethallunderstanding,shallkeepyourheartsandmindsthroughChristJesus.Finally,brethren,whatsoeverthingsaretrue,whatsoeverthingsarehonest,whatsoeverthingsarejust,whatsoeverthingsarepure,whatsoeverthingsarelovely,whatsoeverthingsareofgoodreport;iftherebeanyvirtue,andiftherebeanypraise,thinkonthesethings.” 4) LearntotrustGodduringunpleasantcircumstances.(Proverbs3:5-6)“TrustintheLORDwithallthineheart;andleannotuntothineownunderstanding.Inallthywaysacknowledgehim,andheshalldirectthypaths.” 5) RejoiceintheLord.(Philippians4:4)“RejoiceintheLordalway:andagainIsay,Rejoice.” 6) ThankGodinthemidstofyourtrials.(1Thessalonians5:18)“Ineverythinggivethanks:forthisisthewillofGodinChristJesusconcerningyou.” 7) AskGodforwisdomtohelpthosewhodoorsaythingsthatbreakyourspirit.(Luke6:28)“Blessthemthatcurseyou,andprayforthemwhichdespitefullyuseyou.” 8) SeekthecounselofagodlyChristian.Thisisespeciallyimportantinmarriageconflicts. 9) AskGodtorestoreyourjoy.AfterKingDavidrepentedofhissin,heprayed,(Psalms51:12)“Restoreuntomethejoyofthysalvation;andupholdmewiththyfreespirit.” b. Ruleyourspiritsoyoudon’tbreakotherspirits 1) Ifyouhaveanunruledspiritthatisbreakingsomeone’sspirit,donotblamethem.Dealwithyourunruledspirit. 2) Godhasclearlystatedthatifwehaveoffendedsomeone,hewillnothearourprayersuntilwehavegottentheoffensecorrectedbiblically(Mt5:23). Conclusion:Abrokenspiritisanormalresponsetopainfulcircumstances,butwemustnotletitlinger.ApplyGod’scurerightaway.Ifyouneedhelp,seekcounsel.Ifyoucauseabrokenspirit,dealwithyourunruledspiritbiblicallyaswelearnedthelasttwoweeks.
