BibliographicalInformationBarnes,Albert."CommentaryonProverbs17:22"."Barnes'NotesontheWholeBible".https://www.studylight.org/commentaries/bnb/proverbs-17.html.1870.returnto'JumpList'Smith'sBibleCommentaryChapter17Betterisadrymorsel,withquietness,thanahousefullofsacrificeswithstrife(Proverbs17:1).Nowthehousefullofsacrificesrefertothesacrifices.It's,ifinthateconomytheoftheJudaism,ifyoudecidedthattonightyouwantedtohaveroastlegoflamb,tobutcheryourlambyou'dtakeitdowntothetempleandyoubringittothepriest.Andyou'dsay,"IwanttoofferthisasapeaceofferinguntoGod,asacrifice."Soyou'dbutcherthelambandthepriestwouldtakethefatandputitonthefireandburnitandthesmokeandall,ofcourse,smellsrealgoodandthat'syourportion,God,youknow.AndItakeandthepriestgetshisportionout,putshishookin,getshisportion,butthentherestofitIroasttonight,andIgathertogethermyfamilyandfriends,wehaveabigbarbecue.Sothehousefullofsacrificesactuallyreferstoahousefullofmeat,whichinthosedays,andisbecomingmoresonow,arealdelicacy."Butadrymorselinquietness,inpeace,isbetterthanawholehousefullofsacrificeswithstrife."Awiseservantshallhaveruleoverasonthatcausethshame,andshallhaveapartoftheinheritanceamongthebrethren.Thefiningpotisforsilver,thefurnaceforgold:buttheLORDtrieththehearts(Proverbs17:2-3).NowtheBiblespeaksaboutGodtestingourworksbyfire.Godtryingourhearts.Thetestingofourworks,really,whenitcomesdowntoit,isnotsomuchwhatwehavedone,butthemotivethatwasbehindwhatwasdone.Biblesaysthatallofourworksaretobetestedtoseewhatsorttheyare.Testedbyfire.Andthoseworksthatcanremainafterthetestingoffire,you'llberewardedfor.Butmanyoftheworksthatwedoareaswood,hayandstubble.They'regoingtogoupintheflame.Ireallydidn'tdothemwithapuremotive.Thoughtheworkmaybeaverycommendablething,"Oh,lookwhathedid!"Youknow.Andaverycommendablething,yetitwasdonewiththemotiveofbringinggloryorhonortomyself.Iwasdoingittobeabigshow.Iwasdoingitsopeoplewouldknowwhatagreat,neatguyIam,youknow.Andtobringattentionorhonortomyself.Well,thosekindofworksaregoingtobetriedbyGod,forGodtriestheheartsandHeknowswhatisinmyheartwhenIamdoingsomething.Allofourworkstestedbyfire.Jesussaid,"Takeheedtoyourselfthatyoudonotyourrighteousnessbeforementobeseenofmen."Don'tletthatbethemotive.Theapproval,thepraise,therecognitionofman."For,"Hesaid,"Isayuntoyou,youhaveyourreward"(Matthew6:1-2).Soevenasthefiningpotisforsilverandthefurnaceistoburnoutthedrossinthegold,soitistheLordwhothroughthefirewilltryourhearts,ourworks,themannerorsorttheyare.Awickeddoergivesheedtofalselips;andaliargivetheartothenaughtytongue.WhosomockeththepoorreproacheshisMaker(Proverbs17:4-5):NowGodtakesupthecauseforthepoor.Soifyou'repoor,takeheart.Godtakesupyourcause.AndanyonewhomocksthepoorisreproachinghisMaker."HasnotGodchosenthepoorofthisearthyetrichinfaith?"(James2:5)hethatisgladatcalamitiesshallnotbeunpunished(Proverbs17:5).Oneofthecharacteristicsofthisagapelovein1Corinthians13:1-13isthatitrejoicesnotininiquity.Itrejoicesnotinthecalamity.Youknow,therearesomepeoplewejusthopesomethingbadhappenstothem.Theydeserveit.Andwhenithappens,yousay,"Allright,Iknewit,youknow.Theyhaditcomingandall."Andyet,"Hethatisgladatcalamitiesshallnotgounpunished."Sobecarefulofthat.It'sthewrongattitude.Children'schildren[oryourgrandchildren]arethecrownofoldmen(Proverbs17:6);Amen.Theyareglory.andthegloryofchildren,theirfathers.Excellentspeechbecomesnotafool:muchlesslyinglipsaprince(Proverbs17:6-7).Quiteacontrast.Agiftisasapreciousstoneintheeyesofhimthathasit:whereverheturnsit,heprospers(Proverbs17:8).Inotherwords,it'sjustapreciousstonewhereveryouturnityouseethedifferentcolorsandfacets.Soisagiftlikeapreciousstonetothemanwhoreceivesit.Hethatcoversatransgressionseekslove(Proverbs17:9);NowtheBiblesays,"Lovecoversamultitudeofsins"(1Peter4:8).Ifyoucoverit,you'reseekinglove.buthethatrepeatsamattercanseparatefriends.Areproofentersmoreintoawisemanthanahundredstripesintoafool(Proverbs17:9-10).It'sinterestinghowthatinraisingchildrenyoufindthediversitiesofpersonalitiesevenofyourownchildren.Andyoulearnthattherearesomekindsofpunishmentthatworkforonechildbutdon'tworkforanother.Withsome,justawordofreproofandthey'redevastated.Othersyoucanwailonthemanditdoesn'ttouchthem.MylittlegrandsonBradley,weweredowninPhoenixandwewerehavingThanksgivingdinnerwiththefamilythere.AndIthinkitwasduringprayerthathehadbeennaughtyor...soIsaid,"Bradley,Grandpaisashamedofyou."Well,thekid,hewaslikeIhadbeatenhim.Hewailedandcried.Hewas...broketears.Grandpahadneversaidanythingbeforetohimofacrossorangrynatureanditjustdevastatedthepoorlittleguytohavegrandpadisappointedabouthim.Itjustalmostdestroyedhim."Reproofentersmoreintoawiseman'sheartandallthanahundredstripesentersintoafool."Anevilmanseeksonlyrebellion:thereforeacruelmessengershallbesentagainsthim.Letabearrobbedofhercubsmeetaman,ratherthanafoolinhisfolly(Proverbs17:11-12).ThatoneIthoughtwasquiteinteresting.Iwouldn'twanttomeetabearrobbedofhercubs.ButIwouldn'twanttomeetafoolinhisfolly,either.Whosorewardsevilforgood,evilshallnotdepartfromhishouse(Proverbs17:13).That'squiteaproverbandit'squiteawarning."Whosorewardsevilforgood,evilwillneverdepartfromhishouse."Thebeginningofstrifeisaswhenoneletsoutwater:thereforeleaveoffcontention,beforeitbemeddledwith(Proverbs17:14).Onceyoustartlettingthewaterout,it'sawfullyhardtostop.Therefore,stayawayfromcontention,thebeginningofstrife.Hethatjustifiesthewicked,andhewhocondemnsthejust,eventheybothareanabominationuntoGod(Proverbs17:15)."Woeuntothemwhosaywhocallevilgood,andgoodevil"(Isaiah5:20).Why?Becauseit'sanabominationtotheLord.Whereforeisthereapriceinthehandofthefooltogetwisdom,seeinghehathnohearttoit?(Proverbs17:16)Ilovethisone.Afriendlovesatalltimes,andabrotherisbornforadversity(Proverbs17:17).Afriend,theyloveatalltimes.Brother,hehasbeenbornforthistimeofadversity.Amanwhoisvoidofunderstandingstrikeshands,andbecomesasuretyinthepresenceofhisfriends(Proverbs17:18).Nowhereallywarnsaboutthisbusinessofstrikinghandsandbeingasuretyforsomeoneelse.Evidently,hegotburnedmanytimesonthis.Hethatlovestransgressionthatlovesstrife:andhethatexaltshisgateseekdestruction.Hethathathaperverseheartfindsnogood:andhethathasaperversetonguefallsintomischief.Hethatbegetsafooldoethittohissorrow:andthefatherofafoolhasnojoy(Proverbs17:19-21).Wouldn'titbetragictohaveachildthat'safool?Hewhobegetsafooldoesittohisownsorrow;thefatherofafoolhasnojoy.Amerryheartdoesgoodlikeamedicine(Proverbs17:22):Youknow,moreandmoretheyarelearningwhatahealthythingitistobehappy.Themerryheart.Whenyoueatlaughter,justgetstherightjuicesgoingthatreallyhelpyoutodigestyourfoodwell.Amerryheartisjustasgoodforyouasmedicine.Therelationshipbetweenourattitudesandourphysicalwell-being,howthattheseglandsthatareexcretingthevariouschemicalsintooursystems,thegoodchemicalsthatcomeinjoyandinhappiness.Andtheotherchemicalsthatareproducedinfearorinangerandbitternessorwhatever,thosechemicalswhichdestroyyou.Sowithoutknowingallofthecapacitiesandworkofthepituitaryandhypothalamusandeverythingelse,Solomonjustmadeanobservationthatamerryheartisgoodlikeamedicine.butabrokenspiritcandryupthebones.Awickedmantakesagiftoutofthebosomtopervertthewaysofjudgment.Wisdomisbeforehimthathasunderstanding;buttheeyesofthefoolroamtotheendsoftheeaRuth(Proverbs17:22-24).Theoneisbeforeyou;theotherisalwayslookingouttotheendsoftheearth.Afoolishsonisagrieftohisfather,andbitternesstoherthatbarehim.Alsotopunishthejustisnotgood,nortostrikeprincesforequity.Hethathathknowledgesparethhiswords:andamanofunderstandingisofanexcellentspirit(Proverbs17:25-27)."Hethathathknowledgesparethhiswords."Howdoesitgo?"Therewasanoldowlwholivedintheoak.Themorehesaw,thelesshespoke.Thelesshespoke,themoreheheard.Whycan'tyoubelikethatoldbird?"Andofcourse,inthesamelineistheproverbthereinverseProverbs17:28.Evenafool,whenheholdshistongue,iscountedwise:andhethatkeepshislipsshutisesteemedamanofunderstanding(Proverbs17:28).Youknow,justsitbackandsay,"Hmm.Well,uh-hmm,youknow."Feeling,"Man,he'ssmart.""CopyrightStatementCopyright©2014,CalvaryChapelofCostaMesa,Ca.
