Whereisageismseen? Ageismiseverywhere:fromourinstitutionsandrelationshipstoourselves.Forexample,ageismisinpoliciesthatsupporthealthcarerationingbyage,practicesthatlimityoungerpeople’sopportunitiestocontributetodecision-makinginthe workplace,patronizingbehaviorusedininteractionswitholderandyoungerpeople,andinself-limitingbehavior,whichcanstemfrominternalizedstereotypesaboutwhatapersonofagivenagecanbeordo. Isageismreallyaproblem? Halftheworld’spopulationisageistagainstolderpeopleand,inEurope,theonlyregionforwhichdataisavailableonallagegroups,youngerpeoplereportmoreagediscriminationthanotheragegroups.Ageismcanchangehowweviewourselves,canerodesolidaritybetweengenerations,candevalueorlimitourabilitytobenefitfromwhatyoungerandolderpopulationscancontribute,andcanimpactourhealth,longevityandwell-beingwhilealsohaving far-reachingeconomicconsequences.Forexample,ageismisassociatedwithearlierdeath(by7.5years),poorerphysicalandmentalhealth,andslowerrecoveryfromdisabilityinolderage.Ageismalsoincreasesriskyhealthbehaviors,suchaseating anunhealthydiet,drinkingexcessivelyorsmoking,andreducesourqualityoflife.IntheUnitedStates,oneineverysevendollarsspentonhealthcareeveryyearfortheeightmostexpensiveconditionswasduetoageism(US$63billionintotal). Canwecombatageism? Threestrategiesworkinreducingoreliminatingageism:policyandlaw,educationalactivitiesandintergenerationalinterventions.Policyandlawcanaddressdiscriminationandinequalityonthebasisofageandprotectthehumanrightsofeveryone,everywhere.Educationalactivitiescanenhanceempathy,dispelmisconceptionsaboutdifferentagegroupsandreduceprejudicebyproviding accurateinformationandcounter-stereotypicalexamples.Intergenerationalinterventions,whichbringtogetherpeopleofdifferentgenerations,canhelpreduceintergroupprejudiceandstereotypes.
