Backinthedayitwasoneofthemostarcade-likegamesI'deverseenonaconsole;rememberthisisanerawherelight-gungamesandSEGARallyontheSaturnwerehugelyimpressive—yes,simplertimes.Ididn'tliveinatownwitharealarcade,sowheneverIsawcoin-opmachinesonatripIwouldobsessoverplayingthem(muchtomyparent'sannoyance). Thegamewouldthrowyouaroundandletyouknowtorespecttheelements WaveRace64hadthatvibe,forme,andithadthatwater.ItmaynotlooktoowildnowadayswhenwehavethelikesofSeaofThievesrecreatingtheseainstunningdetail,buttheideaofagamewithrealisticwavesandphysicstomatchseemedfancifulatthetime.Yetthat'swhatthegameachieved.Youweren'tracingajet-skiaroundasifitwasacaronaflatsurface;thegamewouldthrowyouaroundandletyouknowtorespecttheelements. Ofcourse,asbetterplayersandspeedrunnersknow,thewavesopenedupsomeprettyfancyjumpsandshortcuts,whichfeeldeliberate.Iwouldbeluckytogetthrougharunin'normal'difficulty,butwouldsitandwatchmyolderbrothertacklingthetoughestCPUAIandtakingeveryshortcutonoffer.It'sagamethatgetsgenuinelydifficultifyou'reuptothechallenge,soeventodaythere'sgoodreplayvalue.Youcanberubbishlikeme,orreallygettogripswiththemechanicsanddominate—thedevelopmentteamdidadmirablework.
