Theorganizationwasfoundedin1941astheJointCommitteeonPowderDiffractionStandards(JCPDS).In1978,thenameoftheorganizationwaschangedtothecurrentnametohighlighttheglobalcommitmentofthisscientificendeavor. TheICDDisanonprofitscientificorganization,foundedby,anddedicatedtoscientistsworkinginthefieldofX-rayanalysisandmaterialscharacterization.TheICDDproducesmaterialsdatabases,characterizationtools,andeducationalmaterials,aswellasorganizingandsupportingglobalworkshops,clinicsandconferences.ItprovidesthescientificcommunitywiththetoolsrequiredforX-rayanalysiswhilecontinuingtoeducateandinformcurrentandfuturescientistsinthefield. TheVision-TheInternationalCentreforDiffractionDatawillcontinuetodeveloptoolsandsupporttheeducationrequiredformaterialsanalysesoftomorrow. TheMission-TheInternationalCentreforDiffractionDatawillcontinuetobetheworldcenterforqualitydiffractionandrelateddata,andworld-classsoftwaretomeettheneedsofthetechnicalcommunity.ICDDpromotestheapplicationofmaterialscharacterizationmethodsinscienceandtechnologybyprovidingforumsfortheexchangeofideasandinformation. In2020,ICDDandCCDCannouncedadatapartnershiptodrivegreateropportunitiesinpharmaandmaterialsdevelopment.TheCambridgeCrystallographicDataCentre,CCDC,curatesandmaintainstheCSD(CambridgeStructuralDatabase)–theworld’srepositoryforsmall-moleculeorganicandmetal-organiccrystalstructures.Bothnon-profitorganizationshaveastrongfocusondataquality,withentrieseditedandverifiedmanuallytoensureaccuracyandstandardizedformat.ThepartnershipwillseetheICDDcalculateandpublishdiffractionpatterns,includingatomiccoordinates,fromstructuresfoundintheCSD.Bycombiningpowderandsingle-crystaldatainthismanner,theabilitytomatchsamplestoknownstructureswillbeenhanced–enabling,forexample,rapidanalysisinthepharmaceuticalindustryfromAPIdiscoverythroughdrugdeliveryformulation.
