In1997,ParkJoon-hyungflewtoSouthKoreawiththegoalofcreatingagroupwhichblendedWesternandAsianinfluences.[16]HerecruitedhiscousinDannyAhnandthelatter'sfriendSonHo-young,YoonKye-sangandKimTae-woowerelaterrecruitedthroughauditions.[17]TheirformationwasfraughtwithdifficultiesfromthebeginningastheirtalentmanagementcompanyEBM(whichmergedintoSidusandagainsplittobecomeiHQ(SidusHQ)in2005)hadbeenaffectedbythe1997Asianfinancialcrisisandwasforcedtocutfinancialfundingforitstrainees.[18][19]Afteroverayear,executivesallowedthemtocontinuewiththeprojectduetotheirpersistenceandintroducedsinger-songwriterandJYPEntertainmentfounderParkJin-youngtobetheirproducerandmentor.[17][20]KimSun-alefttopursueactingandKimTae-woo,whowasstillahighschoolstudent,wasthefinalmemberadded,joiningthegroupinJuly1998.[21][22][23]Thegroupwastobecalled"GOT6",buttheirnamewaschangedtog.o.d(GrooveOverDose)insteadwhenitbecameafive-memberboyband;ParkJin-younghassincerevealedthatGOT7'sgroupnameoriginatedfromGOT6.[20][24]

ThegroupmadetheirdebutappearanceonJanuary13,1999,performing"ToMother"(어머님께),thetitletrackoftheirfirstalbum,liveontheSBSlatenightshowOneNightofTVEntertainment(ko).[18][23]ThemusicvideoforthesongfeaturedactorJangHyuk.Althoughithassincebecomeoneoftheirmostfamoussongs,theinitialtelevisedperformancedidnotearnapositiveresponsefromthoseinthemusicindustry.[25][26]g.o.dalsogainedattentionfortheir"boysnextdoor"personaandvocaltalent,[27][28]astarkcontrasttothetrendoftheerawhichwaslargelyfocusedongroupswithvisuallyappealingmembersandhighlysophisticatedandenergeticchoreography.[23][29][30]Theyreleasedtheirsecondalbumattheendoftheyearanditgarneredamuchbetterresponseandalsoearnedthegrouptheirfirstever#1winonamusicprogram.
2000–2006:Mainstreamsuccess,Kye-sang'sdeparture,andhiatus[edit]
InJanuary2000,thefivemembersappearedinarealityTVseries,calledg.o.d'sBabyDiaries(ko),whichairedasasegmentofMBC's"AchievetheGoalSaturday"(ko)weekendprogram.Themembersactedasafamilytotakecareofaneleventh-montholdboynamedHanJae-min.[31]Everyoneofthemhadaduty(i.e.SonHoYoungactedas'mommy'andParkJoonHyungas'daddy').TheshowwaspopularduetothefactthatitwasthefirsttimeanidolgrouphadstarredintheirownrealityshowanditshighratingsreportedlyforcedthesketchcomedyshowGagConcert,whichairedatthesametimeonMBC'scompetitorbroadcasterKBS,toswitchtimeslots.[32][33]
Justayearafterdebuting,g.o.dsawsuccesswiththereleaseoftheirthirdalbum,whichsoldoveramillioncopies.[31]Itspromotedtrack"Lies"(거짓말)dominatedthe#1spotonmusicprogramsandalsowontheDaesang("GrandPrize")attheKBSMusicAwards.Followingthesuccessoftheirthirdalbum,g.o.dheldtheirfirstnationaltourbeginninginFebruary2001andbecameonlythesecondK-popgroup(afterH.O.T.)toholdaconcertinthelargestsportsvenueinSouthKorea,theSeoulOlympicStadium.[34]InNovemberthatyear,g.o.dlaunchedtheirfourthalbumChapter4,theirsecondalbumtohitamillioninsales.[35][36]Thetitletrack"Road"(길)toppedtherankingsonseveralmusicshowsandhassincebecomeaclassichit.ThealbumwontheDiskDaesang(GrandPrize)atthe16thGoldenDiscAwards.Additionally,thegroupachievedararefeatbysweepingtheDaesangawardsattherespectiveyear-endmusicawardsrunbythecountry'sthreemajorbroadcastingstationsKBS,SBSandMBC.[37][38]
ThegroupnearlybrokeupinSeptember2001afterParkwasdiscoveredtobedating,whichwasconsideredtobetabooformostpopstarsinSouthKoreaatthattime.[39]Theirmanagementannounced,withoutinforminghimortheothergroupmembers,thathewastoleavethegroupandg.o.dwouldcontinueasaquartet.Itwasmetwithstrongobjectionfromfans,whorepeatedlysignedpetitions,threatenedtoboycottconcertsandstatedtheirintentionsofreturningpurchasedmerchandiseforrefunds.Ahn,Yoon,SonandKimheldtheirownpressconference,withouttheknowledgeoftheirmanagement,toshowtheirsupportforPark.ByNovember,theirmanagementeventuallybackeddown.[40][41][42][43]
Havingestablishedthemselvesasthecountry'sbestsellingidolgroupof2001,g.o.dwasinvitedtoperformattheinauguralMTVAsiaAwardsheldinSingaporeastheKoreanrepresentativeandwasnominatedfortheFavoriteArtistAward(Korea).[44][45][46]WhileinSingapore,thegroupwasinterviewedbyTimemagazineandfeaturedonthecoveroftheAsianeditionforJuly29.However,thearticletheywerefeaturedinwasmetwithcriticismbyKoreanmusiccritics,localmediaandg.o.d'smanagementagencySidusHQastheauthorusedamisquoteattributedtoYoonKye-sangtosegueintoanopinioneditorialaboutcorruptionwithintheK-popindustryratherthanfocusong.o.dasoneofthecountry'smostpopularpopgroups.[45][47][48]Theywerechosenasthecountry'srepresentativeartistestobefeaturedinthe2002FIFAWorldCupofficialalbumFeverPitch,forwhichtheyrecordedthesong"TrueEastSide".[49]InJulytheytookabreakfromtelevisionpromotionsandbegantheir"100-dayHumanConcert"serieswherealltheshowsweresoldoutandeachdayhadadifferenttheme.[47][50][51]
Yoonleftthegroupin2004andg.o.dswitchedtoJYPEntertainmentaftertheirgroupcontractwithSidusHQexpired.[52]Theycontinuedpromotingasaquartet,releasinganothertwomorealbums.[53][54][55]Theywentonhiatusfrom2006afterholdingtheirlastconcertinDecember2005.Variousmediaoutletsandsourceshavedescribedthemashavingdisbandedbetween2006and2014.However,theremainingmembersstatedthattheychosenotusetheterm"disbanding"astheyhadpromisedfanstheywouldreuniteasafive-pieceatsomepointinthefuture.[56][57][27]Allmembersremainedintheentertainmentindustry:ParkreturnedtotheUnitedStatestopursueacting,AhnhostedKBSCoolFM'sKisstheRadiowhileSonandKimcontinuedassingersandmusicalactors.Theremainingfourmembersunofficiallyreunitedtoperformin2012attheKoreanMusicFestivalinLosAngeles[58]andonSBSMTV'sTheStageBigPleasure.[59]
2014–present:Reunion[edit]
Beginningin2013therewasalreadyspeculationthatthemembersofg.o.dwerediscussingthepossibilityofreuniting.[60][61][62]FollowingYoonKye-sang'sconfirmationtorejointhegroupandlengthydiscussionandorganizationwiththemembers'individualmanagements,[63][64]theyrecommencedgroupactivitiesundertheiroriginalmanagementagencySidusHQ.[19][65][66]OnMay3,2014their15thanniversaryconcertwasannouncedthroughaTVadvertisementwhichairedonKoreancablechanneljTBC,followedbyconfirmationfromtheirmanagementagency.[5][67]Despitethelow-keyannouncementandthegroup'srefusaltopromoteonmusicprograms,theircomebackreceivedextensivemediacoverageandbecameatrendingtopicontheinternetwithinSouthKoreaastheywerethefirstinactiveK-popidolgrouptomakeacomebackwithallofitsoriginalmembers.[68][69]
ThealbumChapter8wasreleasedonJuly8,2014.[1]Severalsongswerepre-releasedasteasersfortheirofficialcomebacktour.Thepre-releasedsingles,"TheLoneDuckling"(also"TheUglyDuckling")(미운오리새끼)and"SkyBluePromise"(하늘색약속),bothachieved"allkills"inthedigitalcharts.[70][71]Themusicvideosfor"SaturdayNight",whichcontainedreferencesoftheirhit"FridayNight",andtheballad"StoryofOurLives"wereuploadedonYouTube.[1][72]ThealbumwasrepackagedandreleasedinOctoberasthe"ThankYou"editionandincludedanewsong"Wind"(바람),whoselyricswerewrittenbyYoontoexpresshisgratitudetofans.[73][74]

Thegroupbegantheir15thanniversarytouronJuly12,2014atJamsilSportsComplexwitharound14,000fansinattendance.Itwastheirfirstconcertasaquintetin12years.InitiallytheyhadplannedtoholdtwoconcertsovertwodaysinSeoulbutextendedittoeightmoredatesinfourothercitiesduetopopulardemand.[10][75][76]Theyalsomadetheirfirsttelevisedperformancetogetherin12yearsonSeptember5asexclusiveguestsonYouHee-yeol'sSketchbook,[77]theonlyguestswhohavebeengrantedthehonor.[78][79]TheyconcludedtheirnationaltourwithanencoreconcertinOctoberatthe40,000-capacitySeoulOlympicStadium,[80][81]thesecondtimetheyhaveheldasold-outconcertatthevenue.[34]InNovembertheyextendedtheirtouroverseasforthetime,holdingconcertsattheStaplesCenterinLosAngeles,CaliforniaandPrudentialCenterinNewark,NewJersey,andbecamethefirstsingleSouthKoreangrouptoplayatstadiumsintheUnitedStatessinceBIGBANG(AliveGalaxyTour).[34][82]
Thegroupmadeararelivetelevisedperformanceasaquintet,performingatthe"IAmKorea"GalaConcertcelebrating70yearsofindependencewhichwasbroadcastliveonKBS1.[83]OnDecember9,2015,theyreleasedthemaxisingle"AFunnybutSadDay"(웃픈하루)[84]andthemusicvideowasuploadedbyCJE&Minanticipationoftheirupcomingyear-endconcerts.[85][86][87]Althoughthegroupdidnotpromotethesongatall,itwasthetop30mostdownloadedsinglesthatmonthandremainedintheGaonDigitalChartforsixconsecutiveweeks.[88][89]Theyheldaseriesofsold-outconcertsinSeouloverfivedaysbeforeheadingtoDaeguandBusantocelebratetheChristmasholidaysandNewYear'sDaywithfans.[4][90][91][92]Theytookabreakin2016whilethemembersreturnedtotheirsoloactivities.
Forthefirsttwomonthsof2017g.o.dembarkedontheirsecondnationwidetoursincereuniting.Entitledg.o.dtoMENthetourbeganinSeoul[93]andwenttofiveothermajorcities.[94][95]TheIncheonconcertonJanuary13wasextendedbyseveralhoursasitcoincidedwiththe18thanniversaryoftheirdebutandculminatedinaspecialfaneventhostedbyDinDin.[18][96][97]
OnSeptember19,2018,jTBCreleasedatrailerofShallWeWalkTogether(같이걸을까),a10-episodetravelvariety-realityshowwhichdocumentedthemembers'triptowalktheCaminodeSantiagoinSpain.[98][99]ItbeganairingonOctober11,aspartofaseriesofprojectstocelebratethe20thanniversaryoftheirdebut.[100]OnNovember27,theyreleasedthesingle"Snowfall"(눈이내린다)tolittlefanfareanditdebutedat#63ontheGaonDigitalChartthatweekwithover9milliondownloadsandstreamsdespiteintensecompetitionfromtheirmuchyoungercounterparts.[101]FromNovember30toDecember2theyheldaseriesofconcertsentitled"Greatest"attheKSPODomebeforeplayinginBusanandDaeguonDecember22and25respectively.[102][103]Inapositivereview,theKukminIlbonotedthattheconcertswereappropriatelynamedasg.o.dwasoneofthefewK-popgroupswhocouldputtogetherafullsetlistconsistingalmostexclusivelyofnumber1songs,with17outof20songsinthesetlistbeingnumber1hitsonSouthKoreanmusicprograms.[104]OnJanuary10,2019,thealbumThen&Nowwasreleased.[105]Itcontainsamixtureofneworiginalmaterial,includingatitletrackcomposedbyParkJin-young,remixedandre-recordedsongsfrompreviousalbums.OnJanuary13theyheldthelastoftheiranniversaryconcerts,playingtoasold-outcrowdattheKSPODome.[106]
