Sellingcounterfeit,unsafeanddiscardeditems ThesellingofcounterfeitproductsbyAmazonhasattractedwidespreadnotice,withbothpurchasesmarkedasbeingfulfilledbythirdpartiesandthoseshippeddirectlyfromAmazonwarehousesbeingfoundtobecounterfeit.ThishasincludedsomeproductssolddirectlybyAmazonitselfandmarkedas"shipsfromandsoldbyAmazon.com".[189]CounterfeitchargingcablessoldonAmazonaspurportedAppleproductshavebeenfoundtobeafirehazard.[190][191]Suchcounterfeitshaveincludedawidearrayofproducts,frombigticketitemstoeverydayitemssuchastweezers,gloves,[192]andumbrellas.[193]Morerecently,thishasspreadtoAmazon'snewergroceryservices.[194]Counterfeitingwasreportedtobeespeciallyaproblemforartistsandsmallbusinesseswhoseproductswerebeingrapidlycopiedforsaleonthesite.[195] OneAmazonbusinesspracticethatencouragescounterfeitingisthat,bydefault,selleraccountsonAmazonaresettouse"commingledinventory".Withthispractice,thegoodsthatasellersendstoAmazonaremixedwiththoseoftheproduceroftheproductandwiththoseofallothersellersthatsupplywhatissupposedtobethesameproduct.[196] InJune2019,BuzzFeedreportedthatsomeproductsidentifiedonthesiteas"Amazon'schoice"werelowquality,hadahistoryofcustomercomplaints,andexhibitedevidenceofproductreviewmanipulation.[197] InAugust2019,TheWallStreetJournalreportedthattheyhadfoundmorethan4,000itemsforsaleonAmazon'ssitethathadbeendeclaredunsafebyfederalagencies,hadmisleadinglabelsorhadbeenbannedbyfederalregulators.[198] InthewakeoftheWSJinvestigation,threeU.S.senators –RichardBlumenthal,EdMarkey,andBobMenendez –sentanopenlettertoJeffBezosdemandinghimtotakeactionaboutthesellingofunsafeitemsonthesite.Thelettersaidthat"Unquestionably,Amazonisfallingshortofitscommitmenttokeepingsafethoseconsumerswhouseitsmassiveplatform."[199]Theletterincludedseveralquestionsaboutthecompany'spracticesandgaveBezosadeadlinetorespondbySeptember29,2019,saying"WecallonyoutoimmediatelyremovefromtheplatformalltheproblematicproductsexaminedintherecentWSJreport;explainhowyouaregoingaboutthisprocess;conductasweepinginternalinvestigationofyourenforcementandconsumersafetypolicies;andinstitutechangesthatwillcontinuetokeepunsafeproductsoffyourplatform."[199]Earlierinthesamemonth,senatorsBlumenthalandMenendezhadsentBezosaletterabouttheBuzzFeedreport.[199] InDecember2019,TheWallStreetJournalreportedthatsomepeoplewereliterallyretrievingtrashoutofdumpstersandsellingitasnewproductsonAmazon.Thereportersrananexperimentanddeterminedthatitwaseasyforasellertosetupanaccountandsellcleanedupjunkasnewproducts.Inadditiontotrash,sellerswereobtaininginventoryfromclearancebins,thriftstores,andpawnshops.[200][201] InAugust2020,anappealscourtinCaliforniaruledthatAmazoncanbeheldliableforunsafeproductssoldonitswebsite.ACalifornianhadboughtareplacementlaptopbatterythatcaughtfireandcausedhertoreceivethird-degreeburns.[202] Riggedsearchresults Reutershasreported[188]thatAmazonhasriggeditsproductsearchresultstofavoritsbrandinIndia.Accordingtothearticle,leakedinternalstrategydocumentsshowthatAmazonhassystematicallymanipulateditssearchresultssuchthatAmazon'sbrandproductsappearinthefirstthreesearchresults,leadingcustomerstopurchasethoseinsteadofothersellers'productsontheplatform.Thecompanyemployedtwotactics:searchseedingandsearchsparkles.Bysearchseeding,Amazonboostedtherankingsofitsownbrandedgoods.Bysearchsparkles,thecompanyinsertedpromotionsoftheirbrandsintobroadcategorysearches. OnJanuary6,2021,Amazonsaidthatitisplanningtobuild20,000affordablehousesbyspending$2billionintheregionswherethemajoremploymentsarelocated.[263]
