Matthew'sprimeconcernwasthattheJewishtraditionshouldnotbelostinachurchthatwasincreasinglybecominggentile.[4]ThisconcernliesbehindthefrequentcitationsofJewishscripture,theevocationofJesusasthenewMosesalongwithothereventsfromJewishhistory,andtheconcerntopresentJesusasfulfilling,notdestroying,theLaw.[52]MatthewmusthavebeenawareofthetendencytodistortPaul'steachingofthelawnolongerhavingpowerovertheNewTestamentChristianintoantinomianism,andaddressedChrist'sfulfillingofwhattheIsraelitesexpectedfromthe"LawandtheProphets"inaneschatologicalsense,inthathewasallthattheOldTestamenthadpredictedintheMessiah.[53] ThereisabroaddisagreementoverchronologybetweenMatthew,MarkandLukeononehandandJohnontheother:allfouragreethatJesus'publicministrybeganwithanencounterwithJohntheBaptist,butMatthew,MarkandLukefollowthiswithanaccountofteachingandhealinginGalilee,thenatriptoJerusalemwherethereisanincidentintheTemple,climaxingwiththecrucifixiononthedayofthePassoverholiday.John,bycontrast,putstheTempleincidentveryearlyinJesus'ministry,hasseveraltripstoJerusalem,andputsthecrucifixionimmediatelybeforethePassoverholiday,onthedaywhenthelambsforthePassovermealwerebeingsacrificedinTemple.[59]
