SinceRichteralreadyhadanumberoforiginalsongs,eliminatingtheneedtojam,theywereabletoquicklyrecordademotapeintendingittobesenttothe'RockGrandPrix'competitionintheirhometownAarhus,theyhadtohurriedlycomeupwithanamebeforepostingit;Richterwroteasthenameofthesender'MichaelLearnstoRock',partlyinspiredbyalinefromhisschoolEnglishtextbookandpartlybecausetheywereapopbandtakingpartinarockconcert.LentzandRichterhaveadmittedthatthebandwasnamedafterMichaelJackson:"IthinkRichterwasthinkingofMichaelJackson,becausehewascalled'thekingofpop'anditwaskindoffunny,becauseitwaslike,whatwouldhesoundlikeifhelearnedtorock?Itwaswordplay,"Lentzhasstated.Richterclaimedinaninterview :"Yeah,itwaslikeJohnnyHatesJazzandFrankieGoestoHollywood.Sure,I'veregrettedcallingourselvesthismanytimessince,butweweresuccessfulsoquickly,wehadtostickwithitandovertimeIgotusedtoit."[1] On22May1988,thequartetplayedtheirfirstpublicshowinAarhusin'RockGrandPrix'atAarhus'sbiggestvenue,Ridehuset.Asoneofthetwowinningteams,MLTRperformedthatsummerattheAarhusOutdoorFestivalon20June,however,only20peopleturnedup.Thedisappointmentwasoffsetbyadailynewspaper,Information,describingtheunknowngroupas"animmenselypositivesurprise".On30July1988,thegroupenteredandwonthecity'sfamedannualtalentshows'WeHaveTheStage–DoYouHaveTheMusic?'atAarhusMusikhus.[5] JensPeter(J.P.)Andersen,amemberofthecontestjuryaswellasapromoterofDanmarksSmukkesteFestival(literally,"Denmark’sMostBeautifulFestival")atSkanderborg,wasimpressedwiththeband'stalentbutwassomewhatannoyedattheirlackofprofessionalism,sohedecidedtobecometheband'smanager,attheband'srequest.[5]MichaelLearnstoRockcontinuedplayinglivethroughoutJutlandandrecordingmaterialinordertoattracttheattentionofDanishrecordlabels.OneoftheseeffortsincludedthebandcontributingfourtracksforthedoublealbumSecrets,arecordorganisedbytheDanishRockCounciltocreateinterestinfourtalentedbut'secret'newbands.TheyfinallysignedarecorddealwiththeDanishlabelMedleyinJanuary1989.[6]However,thebanddidnotreleasetheirfirstalbum,MichaelLearnstoRock,untilSeptember1991,backedbytheAmericanrecordlabelImpactRecordsandwithmuchofthealbumincludingthefirstAmericansingle,"MyBlueAngel",mixedandproducedbytheAmericanproducersTonyPelusoandSteveBarri.[7] AlthoughnotmakinganyheadwayasintendedinAmericadespiteairplayfor"MyBlueAngel",alatersingle(thesecondinDenmarkafter"IStillCarryOn")fromthealbum,"TheActor",toppedtheDanishchartandalsodidwellinNorway,Sweden,Indonesia,Malaysia,SingaporeandthePhilippines.[5]InJanuary1992,thealbumtoppedtheDanishcharts,followedsoonafterbysuccessinAsia,selling25,000copiesandearninggoldstatusinIndonesiaalone.[6] Internationalbreakthrough—Colours,PlayedonPepper,andband'sfirstGreatestHitscompilation—PaintMyLove(1993–1996)[edit] Encouragedbytheperformanceoftheirfirstalbum,MichaelLearnstoRockreleasedasecondalbum,Colours,inOctober1993whichsoldover1.1millionrecords.[5]Thealbumincludedthesingles"SleepingChild","25Minutes"and"OutoftheBlue".ThebandtouredAsiaforthefirsttime.AtthePhoebusConcertHallinBangkoktheyplayedtotheirlargestaudienceuntilthenof12,000people.Theperformanceofthisalbumcoupledwiththeband'sliveperformancesresultedinthebandreceiving'TheBestPerformingActoftheYear'awardin1994atSEAGrammyAwardsinSingaporefortheirperformanceof"25Minutes",followedbythe'GoldPreis'fromtheGermanradiostationRSH(RadioSchleswig-Holstein)in1995forradiohitssuchas"WildWomen'"and"25Minutes".[6][8] InAugust1995,MichaelLearnstoRock'sthirdalbumPlayedonPepperwasreleased,sellingmorethan1.2millionunits.[5]Tracksinthisalbumincluded"That'sWhy(YouGoAway)"and"Someday".Forthefirsttime,thebandrecordedandproducedthewholealbumthemselves.[9]Topromotethealbum,thegroupperformed25showsintencountries.Thereleaseofthisalbumalsoincreasedtheband'spresenceinhithertountappedmarketslikeBrazil,SouthAfrica,theUAEandelevencountriesintheFarEast,includingJapan.[10] TocapitalizeonthesuccessofPlayedonPepperandtocurbpiracy,[6]MichaelLearnstoRockreleasedthegreatesthitsalbumPaintMyLoveinOctober1996,primarilyinAsia;thealbumsold3.4millioncopies.[5]Thesong,"PaintMyLove",isanEnglishversionof"Kunmeddig"byDanishsingersDortheAndersenandMartinLoft,whichwascomposedbyJaschaRichter.Thebandwasalsochosenastheheadlinerforthe'CelebrateHongKong'concerton6July1997,markingthetransferofHongKongfromtheUnitedKingdomtoChina.[5]ThealbumalsotoppedthechartsinSouthAfricawithsalesofmorethan350,000copiesinSouthAfricaalone. MainstreamSuccessinAsia—NothingtoLose,secondGreatestHitscompilation—MLTR&StrangeForeignBeauty(1997–1999)[edit] Theyreleasedtheirfourthstudioalbum,NothingtoLose,wasreleasedinSeptember1997,andalsosoldmorethan1.1millioncopies.InanincidentthatshowcasedMichaelLearnstoRock'spopularityinAsia,20,000faketicketsweresold(morethantwicethenumberofrealones)foraconcertinHanoi,Vietnam,inDecember1997andwhiletheconcertwason,thoseoutsidewithfaketicketstriedtobreakintotheconcerthallthroughthewindowscausingriotpolicetobedeployed.[11][12]ThebandtravelledtoSouthAfricainJanuary1998,playingsell-outconcertsinJohannesburgandPretoria,consequentlytakingNothingtoLosetothetopofthechartsinSouthAfrica.[6] Soonafter,theband'smemberstookabreaktospendtimewiththeirfamiliesandtodevelopprojectsontheirownorincollaborationwithotherperformers.Theyalsodecidedtore-brandthebandunderthesimplernameofMLTR.[13]Duringthebreak,Richterwrotesomenewsongsfortheband,oneofwhichis"StrangeForeignBeauty"thatwaslateraddedtothe1999greatesthitsalbumGreatestHits–StrangeForeignBeauty.InaprocessundertakenbyMLTRforthefirsttime,thesongwasmadebycompilingthebestdetailsfromrecordingsofideasmadeindividuallybythefourmembers.Thisalbumincludedtheirprevioushits,eitherremixedorrefinedinsomewaybynotableinternationalproducerssuchasChrisLord-Alge(for"Someday","SomethingYouShouldKnow"etc.),Cutfather&Joe(for"SleepingChild")andtheSwedishproducerPerMagnusson(fortheMLTRtophit"TheActor'").[14][15]ThisgreatesthitsalbumwenttothetopoftheDanishsalescharts(thesecondMLTRalbumaftertheirfirstalbumtodoso),aswellinSwedenandPortugal,andloggedsalesofnearlyamillioncopies.[6] SørenMadsen'sdeparture,Jascha'ssoloventures,andcontinuingthebandastrio—BlueNight,PlanetBlue,MichaelLearnstoRock,andWhereIBelong(2000–2006)[edit] In2000,SørenMadsendecidedtoleavethegrouptoembarkonasolocareer.TheremainingthreememberssetthemselvesthechallengeofpursuingasounddifferentfromthatoftheirpreviousalbumsandthusproducedthealbumBlueNight,whichalmostwentplatinuminDenmarkandsoldwellinAsia,[3]withsalesoveronemillion.ThefollowingyearabiographyofMLTR,SomethingYouShouldKnowwrittenbyPoulMartin-Bonde,waspublishedalongwithafewpreviouslyunreleasedrecordings.TheEnglishtranslationofthebookwascalledItNeverRainsonBali,[16]areferencetoanincidentthattookplaceduringtheband's1995Baliconcert,whereano-rainforecastprovedwrongandtheunexpectedrainstoppedtheconcert.[17] AfterthereleaseofBlueNight,thebandtookaprolongedbreak,withRichterworkingonhissoloalbumPlanetBlue.Thebandlateradmittedthattheyevenconsidereddisbandingduringthistime.Theyultimatelydecidedagainstit,followingthesuccessoftheirgreatesthitsalbumreleases,including19LoveSongs/LoveBalladsin2002,whichwenttonumber2[18]inDenmark. Scandinavia(2012–2013)[edit] Inablog,dated13April2010ontheband'swebsite,thebandannouncedthattheyhavestartedworkingontheirnextalbum.Overthelatterpartof2010andthroughout2011,MichaelLearnstoRockbegangivingfeelersabouttheirnextstudioalbumontheirofficialFacebookpage.Thealbumwhichwastillthennotnamed,wassettobereleasedon11August2011inEuropeandDenmark,withreleasesfollowinginotherterritoriesaroundthesametime,butwassubsequentlypostponedtoanunspecifiedlaterdate.[24]InateaserFacebookupdate,thebandrevealedthenameofoneofthetrackstobe"IceBreaker".[25]Elsewhere,inanoteonhisFacebookPage,JaschaRichterhadrevealedthenameofanothersong,"HangingOn",fromtheforthcomingalbum.[26] On19November2011,thebandunveiledthesong"AnyWayYouWantIt"fromtheforthcomingalbumataliveconcertinKathmanduproducedandorganizedbyODCNetwork(P)LTD.ThebandalsoshotfootageinandaroundKathmanduandduringtheperformanceofthesong,toincludeitonthesong'smusicvideo.Thevideoofthesongwasthenreleasedformallyon11June2012bythebandonYouTubefirst,andsoonafter,itstartedairingonTVinIndiaandNepal. However,JaschaRichterrevealsonhisFacebookpageinresponsetoafan'squerythatMichaelJackson'smusicdidinfluencetheirmusic,especiallythelatter'sBadalbumwhichwasreleasedintheyearprecedingMLTR'sformation.Also,JaschaRichterhascitedTalkTalk,a-haandEurythmicstobehisinfluences.A-ha'sinternationalsuccess,inspiteoforiginatingfromthesmallScandinaviancountryofNorway,instilledtheself-beliefintheMLTRmembersthateventhey,hailingfromasimilarlysmallScandinaviancountry(Denmark),couldcarveoutacareerforthemselvesininternationalmusic.[50]
