Thefieldofepistemologyisthusnowavastonewithnumerousresearchareasandissues.Sheffieldhasanestablishedexcellenceinawiderangeoftheseareas.Wereceivedresearchgrantstoworkontheepistemologyoftestimony,thevalue,rationality,andnormativityoftrust,theeducationandthecivicsignificanceofintellectualvirtues.Wehavereceivedgrantstoputonconferencesonthephilosophyoftrustandtranscendentalresponsestoscepticism.Wehaveaparticularlykeeninterestinthemoresocialdimensionsofepistemology,andintheinterconnectionsbetweenthemoralandtheepistemic. BothJamesLenmanandMaxKhanHaywardhaveworkedonmoralepistemology,therelationshipbetweenmoralandepistemicvaluesandthewayinwhichepistemicconstraintsimpactonmoraltheory.Thequestionofwhetheryoucanhavemoralorpracticalreasonsforbelief,andhowmoralorpracticalandepistemicreasoninteractisalsoathemethatemergesinPaulFaulkner’swork,whichhasfocusedontheknowledgeweacquirefromtestimonyandtheroleoftrustinthisprocess.PaulhasabookonthisKnowledgeonTrust,whichhadaspecialjournalsymposiumdedicatedtodiscussingit.ThisfocushasledFaulknertowriteextensivelyonsocialepistemology.Whatistheplaceoffriendshipinepistemology?Canwecommunicatemoralknowledge,aestheticknowledgeandourknowledgeofwhatourexperiencesarelike?Whatshouldwesayaboutthemorecollectivedimensionsofknowledge,suchascollaborativescience?Howshouldwerespondtodisagreement?Whatshouldwemakeofotherwaysofthinkingthatseemalienorplainwrong?Isthereanyepistemicrationalitytoconversion? Oneresponsehereistothinkthatanyconfidencemustbebasedonepistemicvirtues,wherevirtueepistemologyissomethingthatfiguresprominentlyinRyanByerly’swork,givenhisinterestintheintellectualvirtuesandtheirsocialcultivation.RyaniscurrentlywritingabookIntellectualDependability:AVirtueTheoryoftheEpistemicandEducationalIdeal.Relatedtodisagreement,RosannaKeefehaswrittenonwhatisinvolvedinthesuspensionofbelief.Herapproachtothistakesamoreformaldirectionandinvolvesaninvestigationtodegreesofbeliefandthevaguenessthatinfectbelief. ThisavenueconnectswithDominicGregory’sinterestinmodalepistemologyorthestudyofourknowledgeofthenecessaryandpossible.Heisalsointerestedintheroleourimaginationcanplayingroundingthisknowledge.ThescepticalundercurrentinepistemologyisthenrepresentedintheworkofBobSternwhosebookTranscendentalArgumentsandScepticismdiscussestheefficacyoftranscendentalargumentsinrespondingtoscepticismandscepticaldoubt.
