Nowconsiderthis syllogism:                Alldogsarecats.                Allcatsarebirds.                Thus,alldogsarebirds. Thisargumentisvalid,becausetheconclusionsfollowsfromthepremises, butitisclearlynotsoundsincethepremisesarefalse. Ofcourse,more complexdeductiveargumentsmayhavemorethantwopremises. Inmanycases argumentsarelinkedtogether. Theconclusionofoneargumentbecomesa premiseforthenextargument. Inanalyzingcomplexarguments,itisoften importanttobreaktheargumentdownintoitscomponentparts. Inmanycasespartsofdeductiveargumentsare missing. Inordertocritiqueanargument,itmaybeimportanttouncover themissingpremises.
