Ageismisoftenacauseforindividualactsofagediscriminationandalsodiscriminationthatismoresystemicinnature,suchasinthedesignandimplementationofservices,programsandfacilities. Agediscriminationinvolvestreatingpersonsinanunequalfashionduetoageinawaythatiscontrarytohumanrightslaw. TheOntarioHumanRightsCodeprohibitsagediscriminationin:employment,housingaccommodation,goods,servicesandfacilities,contractsandmembershipintradeandvocationalassociations. Agediscriminationisoftennottakenasseriouslyasotherformsofdiscrimination. However,itcanhavethesameeconomic,socialandpsychologicalimpactasanyotherformofdiscrimination. Tocombatageismitisnecessarytoraisepublicawarenessaboutitsexistenceandtodispelcommonstereotypesandmisperceptionsaboutaging. Agingisahighlyindividualexperienceanditisnotpossibletogeneralizeabouttheskillsandabilitiesofanolderpersonbasedonage,anymorethanitispossibletomakeassumptionsaboutsomeonebasedonanyotheraspectoftheiridentity. Humanrightsprinciplesrequirepeopletobetreatedasindividualsandassessedontheirownmerits,insteadofonthebasisofassumptions,andtobegiventhesameopportunitiesandbenefitsaseveryoneelse,regardlessofage. Itisimportanttorecognizethatolderpersonsmakesignificantcontributionstooursocietyandthatwemustnotlimittheirpotential. Atthesametime,ageismcanbecombatedthroughinclusiveplanninganddesignwhichreflectsthecircumstancesofpersonsofallagestothegreatestextentpossible. TheSupremeCourtofCanadahasrecentlymadeitclearthatitisnolongeracceptabletostructuresystemsinawaythatassumesthateveryoneisyoungandthentrytoaccommodatethosewhodonotfitthisassumption. Rather,theagediversitythatexistsinsocietyshouldbereflectedindesignstagesforpolicies,programs,services,facilitiesandsoforthsothatphysical,attitudinalandsystemicbarriersarenotcreated. Wherebarriersalreadyexist,thoseresponsibleshouldidentifythemandtakestepstoremovethem. Finally,itisimportanttorememberthattheexperienceofageismandagediscriminationmaydifferbasedonothercomponentsofaperson’sidentity. Forexample,certaingroupsofolderpersonsmayexperienceuniquebarriersbecauseoftheiragecombinedwiththeirgender,disability,sexualorientation,race,colour,ethnicity,religion,cultureandlanguage.
